The dirty reason you should always take hotel toiletries

There’s quite a bit of debate when it comes to taking toiletries from a hotel room. Some people are adamant on taking them, whether they’re being used or not, while others prefer to leave them unless it’s a matter of urgency.

Whether or not you decide to use them, it’s important to note that any half-used items inevitably end up in landfill, where millions of tonnes of waste ends up.

In 2007 alone Australia deposited more than 21 million tonnes of waste into landfill.

Recently released research might cause you to rethink your hotel toiletry habits and begin taking those travel-sized bottles during your next trip.

Hotels reportedly throw out any half-used items left behind, a sad statistic given that millions of people die each year because of issues that arise due to lack of hygiene, according to the World Health Organisation.

Thankfully one gentleman, Shawn Seipler, from Florida in the United States decided to quit his job in the tech industry to recycle hotel toiletries.

“I called the front desk of the hotel and asked them what happened to the soap when I was done with it,” he said.

“Of course they said ‘well, we throw it away’.”

Upon hearing that Seipler decided to turn his state of shock into an action plan in the form of Clean the World.
