Unprecedented malfunction occurs on Jetstar flight

Passengers have had their travel plans changed after a Jetstar plane flying to Melbourne from Singapore became damaged during the flight.

The flight departed Singapore’s Changi Airport with 242 people on board. The pilots became aware that a tyre “delamination” had occurred and also damaged the plane’s wing just after takeoff.

The plane was forced to turn around and return to Changi Airport.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) found that the tyre had damaged the wing flap and engineers found during inspection of the aircraft that the wheel had been damaged due to excessive use.

A Jetstar spokesman said this was an unprecedented incident and the tyre was well within its lifespan.

“This was the first time that we have had tyre delamination on our Boeing 787 aircraft. The tyre was inspected prior to departure and certified to operate and was below the average lifespan of our tyres,” a Jetstar spokesperson told Travel at 60.
