70 years ago, John said: ‘I’m going to marry that girl’
THE first time that he saw Dulcie Stower, John (known to all as Jack) Stower said “I’m going to marry that girl”.
The two were 10-years-old at the time and first met at Sunday school.
“I always loved her smile,” Mr Stower said.
They both had a lot in common – they both lived in the Southbrook district (Mrs Stower about five miles north of the town centre and Mr Stower five miles south) and they both used to ride double to Sunday school with their siblings.
Mr and Mrs Stower were about 16 when they became a couple and were married six years later on September 6, 1947 in the Glennie Chapel in Toowoomba.
Now, in 2017, the happy couple are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary.
As for their wedding day, Mr and Mrs Stower didn’t remember much except it being a “very happy time”, but Mrs Stower remembered her honeymoon in Sydney with fondness.
“We toured around, had a good look and a very happy time,” she said.

The couple travelled to Sydney for their honeymoon, which Mrs Stower remembers as a “very happy time”.
They lived with Mr Stower’s parents on their dairy farm in the Southbrook district, where he worked with his father and brother.
